Political Couture... fashion strategy in presidential campaign!

There is the word; "Dress for success"... and going even farther there is lot of truth in using the fashion to build someones appearance of success, accentuate its physical qualities and bust its personal confidence. In many ways the fashion is an effective, powerful tool to subtly make personal, social and political statements.

USA TODAY's article "Style becomes a real issue in '08 presidential race." raise the issue of politics and fashion. In all honesty, what have we come to? When did a presidential candidate start becoming a fashion icon rather than a political figure (Life, Cover story, Oct. 15)?

Arianna Huffington, writing in October's Harper's Bazaar says voters want sexiness and good looks to "go hand in hand with empathy, compassion and caring."

"This is an election, maybe the first one since Kennedy-Nixon, where appearance really does matter," says Tom Kolovos, a Chicago-based style-and-image consultant...

"I used to be hip. I can't be hip anymore. I'm running for president,"... Obama told the Vibe magazine. He has to be careful about what his clothes telegraph. When the magazine put him on its September cover, he was offered hip-hop duds for the photo shoot. He declined.

In this extraordinary and heated presidential campaign, every detail counts and so it does for the average "Joe" caught in the political fewer... In case you haven’t heard yet, even politically charged t-shirts can be considered high fashion...specially in the hit of a political campaign.

Political Graphics

Blue State, Red State. Win State, Lose State... Whatever States... Political tension translates into a trend of hot political "correct - incorrect" fashion expression.

The clothing fashion can make a powerful statement about who you are and were are you standing in the political environment... Speaks volumes! Have no doubt about someones convictions, emotions and affiliations by the aperals they chose to wear.

Either you choose the Obama's T Short...

Obama's T-Shirt
Or Obama's bag...

Even the Sarah - McCain's T Short...

Or John's bag...

Or just try to walk into Obama's shoes!!!...

As stupid as this may sound, I believe that Barack Obama's new shoes will greatly reach to teens.

Barack Obama's shoe grabs EVEN teens' attention...
OK!... You made your point!...

Arina ~ You are so darn clever! I was watching Sara Palin on the news this evening, she stopped in Reno for a visit and I was thinking about her style and how it is playing such a huge role in this election. I have noticed a lot of talk show hosts and reporters, female, wearing glasses where I never really noticed the glasses before.

It is nice to see the candidates trying to keep up in this area. I love the Obama tennies!

So great to have you back!

Arina, I wonder if some of these apparel items will be collectors items some day or just end up in the dumpster. Cute shoes!!

Arina

How correct you are in someone dressing for the occasion. Even the ten second impression lasts a long time.

Sincerely

Arina,

If the election comes down to style and looking good, no doubt about it, Obama has a pretty big edge over McCain.

Terrie, Indeed we become more complex and sophisticated in all areas including political arena. Fashion and the art to "market" yourself and is the center piece of this election...

With Obama-mania "Political Fashion for the People" who can keep up??? He just become a huge "Popstar" more than anything else. Fashion-creators of the world have responded to Obama-mania by making great threads for people to express their love.

Are we forgetting this is a presidential election?

Gary, You so right!... I did not think of it. I guess you right all those items can become collectors items some day... But than we have to wait and see.

Tom , It is not only about dressing for the occasion, it is also about how you caring yourself in that dress... It is an art to know how to "dress for success" but takes also a lot of your personal charisma to make an impression. I've worked in fashion industry for more than 10 years (much longer than in real estate) and I know that no matter how perfect an outfit can be... without the person who wear it to bring it to life through its own personality. If you feel good and confident in that dress it shines through.

To look presidential you need to feel presidential... To feel presidential you need to find the style that matches your most intimate aspirations to succeed.

Steven In many ways you're right... With Obama-mania "Political Fashion for the People"who can keep up???... I am afraid not McCain!

He became a huge "popstar" of the young generation... It is great!... Fair game?... I am not sure. I only hope that we can stay focused on issues too.

James, The good old fashion bumper sticker (that never comes out...) is history. Belongs to vintage cars. Today we have the shoes to run the marathon.

Arina- Not true about the bumper stickers, at least where I live.  I just saw one small SUV this afternoon with the back hatch totally covered! Too funny huh!

Of course you still have to pay for this stuff and the proceeds go to the campaign. I think Obama's stuff looks better.....plus if he becomes president, then it remain in vogue.

Good post Arina

Bo, This is a valid observation... proceeds go to the campaign. If we think about it, how much that add money power to a candidate that is just hip and popular... A starting advantage that off-set the campaign.

Posted by Arina S. Hanciulescu about 1 year ago

Christopher I agree it gets too much already... but is tempting to tickle the issue. It is fun and provocative.

Those shoes are definetely stylish and very marilyn Monroe. I could see them beeing worth a pretty penny down the line. Barack Obama is a celebrity and thus has great appeal to youngsters,. Thanks for sharing this with us!

Nathan & Everard, Thank you so much for all your comments.... I am not surprised about Europe's reaction to our election. They were always the land of liberal ideal's "equality, liberty, fraternity" and they will always be that way. The ideal that seduced and crashed millions of great man spirits... I love it to (I come from a family of liberals)... but remains to be seen
