Sex and Real Estate... Who can tell the difference anymore!

  • Trends in Real Estate Advertising: Sex Sells... Really???

1.  Did you know that "sexiest real estate agents" is actually a search phrase that brings 2,500,000 search results in Google... lot of real estate websites use, in a form or an other, the key word "sex" 'sexy"... I guess I didn't do my homework on key phrase research -:) lol

2.  There is a story about a Real Estate Agent Wendy Heath, Belmont Shore CA, who posted a billboard with a photo of herself in bikini which created quite a buzz in blogs and media (including major newspapers and TV).

Her motto on the billboard "Got Real Estate?" She claims her web traffic increased 10 times just in one week. BDW, Whatever happened to her?

Wendy Health and her dog, 'Bruiser,' in Belmont Shore, Calif.,

3.  It appears that our friends at Rain City Guide are ranking #2 for the Sexiest Real Estate Agents key phrase in Google. Considering the number of hits on "sexiest real estate agents" key words... you do the math!

4.  Looking across Google results on "Sex and Real Estate" I almost fall off the chair. What? That is what it takes to increase your presence on Internet? How did I miss that lesson? Hmmmm ... How about "Sex, Lies and Real Estate" key phrase ?... Should I try that? That would make more sense.

Can that be true?... That people looking for Real Estate Online (90% of Real Estate search) would would go to that extend and look for buying-selling in the wrong places (or not?)

 ******************************************

Here is a reflection on the subject of Sex and Real Estate;

The connection between sex and real estate, two fields otherwise light-years apart, is made to the extent that they both serve and satisfy STATUS RANK to its best fulfillment through WEALTH.

  • Definition of wealth? In a strict business world.

achievement + independence + comfort + prosperity + accomplishment + success = WEALTH

Aristotle Onassis, (the Greek shipping magnate who married two of the most famous women in the modern world - Maria Callas, the opera diva, and Jacqueline Kennedy, the widow of US President John F. Kennedy) said;  "There is no point in being rich unless you can have sex with beautiful women."

So when we are talking about the male STATUS RANK , or the female urge for a dependable partner who will give her financial security and good progeny, we are really talking about two facets of the same concept: WEALTH. On the other hand, as humans tend to equate values, when it comes to housing and real estate.

Well, that make SOME sense... How do you see it?

I find an answer to my question. Going to Goole and typing the keywords "Sex and Real Estate' I found a series of posts written by an other ActiveRain member: Jeff Turner

Sex and Real Estate: Why We Love Houses

He is referring to the book "Sex and Real Estate" written by Marjorie Garber

  • Introduction: Sex and Real Estate
  • 1: The House as Beloved
  • 2: The House as Mother
  • 3: The House as Body
  • 4: The Dream House
  • 5: The Trophy House
  • 6: The Summer House
  • Epilogue: Why We Love Houses

As you can see at an unique view and interpretation of emotional process that takes place along the process of buying a Real Estate. The the major cultural reasons why buying a house is such an emotion filled decision. Buying a home is NOT about information. It's about emotion... Right!

I still don't understand what sex has to do with buying a real estate. Buying a home is NOT about sex. It's about emotion... Right? But never the less to employ our undivided attention, challenge our interest and trigger our curiosity she came up with a title of the book quite shocking. If the title would be "Love and Real Estate" or "Emotions and Real Estate"... wouldn't get the same attention. Right?

So, to answer to myself, and those of you who found quite unacceptable to mix business with sex (agreed!) I'll say that it is quite possible in a metaphoric way to put those two together in order to make a point. (it's not all about sex... the way we relate... it's about love... and emotions!)

Cause and Effect... Foreclosure and Health

As a homeowner, one of your most important financial obligations is your monthly mortgage payment, and it's crucial that you pay your mortgage every month and on time. But what happens when you are no longer able to fulfill your financial obligation???

The stress that foreclosure brings can lead to depression, feelings of worthlessness, lack of motivation, embarrassment around family and friends, and the list goes on. Rising foreclosure rates and rising incidences of exhibited mental health disorders will go hand in hand, to a certain extent. The financial hardships that often lead to foreclosure, and the realization by homeowners that they have no other options than to give up their homes, generate enormous amounts of stress.

************************************************

Here are some statistic from: Harris Interactive poll of 1,334 U.S. homeowners, conducted December 5-7, 2007

  • Emotionally the stress of foreclosure can have serious effects on your well-being ... 38% experience depression as result of foreclosure stress related.

  • Children of homeowners are likely to perform higher on academic achievement test and are more likely to finish high school. They also have fewer behavioral problems in school and are less likely to become pregnant as teenagers. That all changes in the climate of foreclosures. The impact of foreclosure on your children is as devastating as for the rest members of that household.

"The housing market will recover, the mortgage industry will recover. But these children won't recover. This will have a lasting impact on their lives," First Focus' Christopher Spina told the PD

  • Hundreds of foreclosed homes are raising concerns about a potential public health issue because their abandoned pools can be a nesting ground for mosquitoes. Abandoned homes are source of polution and health hazard, that dramatically impact the neighborhood homes values and life style.

Who's behind the Sign... "What's your Sign?"

The face of Las Vegas is rapidly changing and updating itself, but one thing remains the same today as it did when it was first created nearly half a century ago... the sign just south of the Strip that welcomes visitors to Las Vegas.
Who's behind the Sign?

The landmark was created in 1959 by Betty Willis for Clark County, Nevada. She and her family were one of the early arrivals in Las Vegas valley coming by horse-drawn wagon in 1905... She left town only to complete her education at an art school in LA.

What's your sign?

She spent seven years on the design. The seven silver dollars that spell “Welcome” were chosen because they wanted the sign to look “lucky” and also a refers to Nevada's nickname as “the Silver State” . The back of the sign reads "Drive Carefully - Come Back SOON  - Willis received $4,000 for her work.

lasvegassign2.jpg

Willis has never trademarked the sign. “It’s my gift to the city,” she said.

The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign, which in 1959 has stood on the south end of the Strip just west of the old Klondike Inn, has been moved.

The sign hasn’t always been in the same spot - as the Strip has grown the sign has been moved further and further south.

Few evenings ago at a Friends of Classic Las Vegas panel discussion at Springs Preserve. Betty Willis (85 years old) answered few questions about what was behind her work and what motivated her to create the sign.

At the question why the word “fabulous” was used to describe Las Vegas on her iconic Welcome sign, she said:  "There was not other word to use,”.... “Las Vegas was fabulous, and we wanted to advertise that.”

Some fellow designer tried to challenge her by asking if the back of the sign should write, "Keep Nevada Green,” (not only as a reminder of an environmental issues but more to be read by the tourists, as they leave town, many of whom lost money at the casinos). Willis argued for a more friendly send-off. “I didn’t think (Keep Nevada Green) was very nice,” she said. “Repeat business is always better.”
