I just read an article about domestic violence and couldn't believe my eye: "One out of every four women will be a victim of domestic violence in their lifetime." Made me sick from my stomach.
Few years ago I received a phone call from a young girl. She was crying and sound extremely scared. She was on the street (actually in a taxi cab) looking to find a place for the night. Why did she call me?
- Firstly because she was very confused and did not know anybody in Las Vegas but her boyfriend (who kicked her - pregnant - on the street).
- Secondly because her boyfriend just happened to be a real estate agent I worked with and she found my phone number on his blackberry.
- Thirdly because she exhausted the list of phone numbers... I was her last chance.
I took her in in a heard beat... Helped her to put her few belongings in one room in my house... She lived with me for 2 years gave birth to a beautiful boy and started a new life. Wasn't easy at all... First because I had to keep protecting her, her child and myself from the anger and abusive temperament of her ex-boyfriend.
But I am not here to tell my ordeal. In few words I will say that I saw first hand what domestic abuse can do to a woman. TERRIFYING!!!! My girlfriend is alright now, she has a beautiful 2 years old boy and is on her way to recover and start fresh new life. I am so proud of her!
Domestic violence occurs in every culture, country and age group. It affects people from all socioeconomic, educational and religious backgrounds. Women with fewer resources or greater perceived vulnerability-girls and those experiencing physical or psychiatric disabilities or living below the poverty line-are at even greater risk for domestic violence and lifetime abuse.
Nevada has the dubious distinction as the No. 1 place in America where more women are murdered by men than any other state. Restraining orders are supposed to help women get away from abusive partners, but their track record is paper thin.
For all out-here in need for help is good to know that there is a way out.
