What goes "down"... must go "up"!

Writing about markets going down is not much fun. What can cause the market to go down?  Anything.  In the short run just about anything can cause the market to go down.  Or up.  Short term ups and downs are hard (impossible?) to forecast but that is what the world is fixated on.

Ho, ho, ho, it's to the lights we go

Its the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Christmas Dividers

The true holiday spirit is about love and kindness, not materialism and shopping. What's your Christmas spirit this year? are you all about the family or the presents? are you feeling child again? Did you forget all the worries and tribulations of the passing year? Yes?... Than you are going to enjoy a wonderful time that the season brings.

Remember your Christmas may not have white snow-topped trees, or a huge pile of presents, or a wonderful choir singing Christmas carols, but your Christmas celebration and thankfulness is all that is required to properly celebrate. Anything more is a bonus.

Few reminders to make your holidays even more pleasant and meaningful.

  • Shop early. Nothing takes away the Christmas spirit like fighting for parking and struggling through crowds.

  • Do something nice for someone. Offer to baby-sit so a friend can do her Christmas shopping, take cookies to your neighbors, or shovel an elderly neighbor's walk.

  • Organize a drive at work or in your neighborhood. Collect food and personal items and donate them to a local shelter for the homeless or for battered women.

  • Decorate your house for the holidays.

  • Play Christmas music.

Its the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Bellagio Conservatory

Christmas trees decorate Bellagio, Caesars Palace and all other hotels, Special Shows and Shopping at the newTown Square Center Add Dazzle to the Strip's Bright Lights.

Las Vegas, known for its bright lights, glows even brighter during the holiday season. Since the visitor count is lower than usual, the Entertainment Capital of the World is also less expensive on most days from December 15 through 29 than at other times of the year.

The holidays bring a sparkling theme to Bellagio

The indoor conservatory, with its high glass ceiling and live plant garden, will blow you away. Make sure you take the time to look down at the floor. I stared at the intricate marble and mosaic patterns for about 30 minutes. The craftsmanship that went into constructing the little details of the Bellagio are fascinating. After you look down, look up. The Italian etched glass that adorns the open ceilings is absolutely breathtaking.

Most tasteful decoration honors go to the Bellagio, where the centerpiece of the hotel's conservatory is an elegantly trimmed tree that reaches toward the area's glass roof. (In 1998, the hotel's opening year, the tree was decorated by Martha Stewart). The Bellagio lobby, already dazzling with its Dale Chihuly-designed glass ceiling, glows with a sophisticated Yuletide décor.

The winter display features festive artic animals, an oversized greeting card, a 42-foot-tall White Shasta Fir ablze in an intricate, state-of-the-art LED display, slim-cut Evergreen firs and red Amaryllis, a stunning eight-foot-tall, red-mirrored millennium star, dancing fountains, a giant holiday wreath, an endearing colony of Emperor penguins, 22 portly birds sporting Santa hats, a 30-foot-tall holiday tree and much more.

What Makes a Home Green?

green homeEvery green home is designed to provide its residents with comfort and quality while maintaining our standards for energy efficiency, indoor air quality, environmental responsibility and resource efficiency.
  • Energy efficiency
At minimum, a green home is designed to improve energy efficiency by 15 percent over a conventionally built home. The incorporation of products such as energy-efficient windows, appliances, mechanical systems and light fixtures can add up to lower energy usage and greater comfort year round.
  • Indoor air quality
The air inside your home makes a difference in how you feel every day, and indoor air quality is a high priority. With options like air filtration systems, controlled ventilation and low-toxic building materials, may allow you to breathe a little easier.
  • Environmental responsibility
The same building materials in a green home that improve indoor air quality also contribute to a cleaner environment, as less toxic products reduce atmospheric pollutants.
  • Resource efficiency
Highly efficient appliances save energy and conserve our region's resources. Many items can be made with a high-recycled content, such as carpet crafted from plastic pop bottles, ceramic tile, paint and insulation. Flooring made from bamboo can make a big difference by minimizing the use of timber. Construction techniques such as steel framing, use of concrete foam blocks and brick will save wood in the home's structure.
    • Solar power
    • Solar hot water
    • Wind power
    • Water saving devices
    • Green Building Certification Programs such as
GreenBuilt, LEED®, EnergyStar®, GreenPoint Rated and many others

Making Green Water from Grey Water

When we are so concerned about the water conservation these days we must take in consideration the benefits of using the Greywater. The best advantage of using greywater, is that it can be used for landscape irrigation. This not only conserves treated tap water, but benefits landscape planting material because it sometimes contains beneficial soil nutrients such as phosphorus and/or nitrogen.

Can we regain the "green" landscape in Las Vegas where for several years now all the efforts were concentrated on replaceing it with dry "deset" landscape?... 2007-11-27_094948gray%20water.jpg

The best advantage of using greywater, is that it can be used for landscape irrigation. This not only conserves treated tap water, but benefits landscape planting material because it sometimes contains beneficial soil nutrients such as phosphorus and/or nitrogen.

What is "greywater"? Greywater is defined as the wastewater produced from baths and showers, clothes washers, and lavatories. The wastewater generated by toilets, kitchen sinks, and dishwashers is called blackwater.

According to the EPA, the average family of four uses 400 gallons of water a day - 146,000 gallons a year. That's a lot of water that quickly runs down the drain! However, much of the water used is clean enough to easily be treated and reused for non-potable (non-human consumption) purposes, such as gardening, flushing toilets, and exterior or clothes washing. Approximately 50% of the water households use annually (73,000 gallons per year) can be recycled and reused. In addition to saving homeowners significant cost in municipal water charges and reducing the demand on freshwater supply, the 73,000 gallons of freshwater saved each year is enough to provide drinking water for more than 300 thirsty people - per year.

It's a waste to irrigate with great quantities of drinking water when plants thrive on used water containing small bits of compost. Unlike a lot of ecological stopgap measures, greywater reuse is a part of the fundamental solution to many ecological problems and will probably remain essentially unchanged in the distant future. The benefits of greywater recycling include:

  • Lower fresh water use
  • Less strain on failing septic tank or treatment plant
  • Greywater treatment in topsoil is highly effective
  • Ability to build in areas unsuitable for conventional treatment
  • Less energy and chemical use
  • Groundwater recharge
  • Plant growth
  • Reclamation of otherwise wasted nutrients
